Computing infrastructure

BioInformatics computing resources types

For data analysis in life sciences, we mainly have access to 4 different resources: Personal computer Representing the most limited resource, this solution is used by every scientist in the day life for basic manipulations and statistical analyses on small data sets. Cluster Summarized as a physical computers collection, cluster computing allow users to exceed the limits of personal computer for large data analysis and / or complex algorithms. Grid Close to the cluster computing concept, grid computing is a virtual infrastructure dedicated to distributed resources. Cloud Recently introduced in scientific computing, cloud computing relies on a virtual infrastructure able to deploy virtual machine / appliance and resources on demand.
